From Surface to Surrealism

Yaron Dotan Saturdays 1–4 pm 6 weeks
(September 15–October, 20) DRW 4170-N1 Non-credit / Tuition: $325

In this workshop you will learn how to use graphite as a medium to
describe a variety of surfaces with such realism that they practically can be touched or tasted. The workshop will begin with some basic lessons on tone gradation and mark-making styles. Then we will draw various wooden,
metallic, soil, and liquid surfaces, and produce more advanced surfaces,
such as hair, skin, foam, creams, and foods, many of which require several
layers in order to achieve a semblance of realism. The workshop will
culminate in a project emphasizing the creative application of a variety of
surfaces to the human body in order to create people with skin of wood,
liquid, sand, or other materials. Demonstration, critiques, and one-on-one
assistance will play a large role in this workshop, which is designed for
students of all levels, and ultimately encourages a melding of playfulness,
imagination, and acute analysis.
